The world can be seen as having two layers—two levels of reality. The first level is the one we interact with daily, known as the phenomenal world, the world of change. This is the surface layer of reality, perceived through our senses. However, beneath this surface lies another layer of reality, mostly invisible to us, permanent and not bound by space and time. This deeper reality is intimately connected to the Self. The faculty of knowing does not belong to our senses but to the Self. Without this profound layer of reality, the phenomenal world as we perceive it could not exist.
Some religions mistakenly describe our reality, the phenomenal layer, as an illusion. This is not entirely accurate; it is better understood as a reflection of a deeper layer of reality, which our senses cannot access. Consider looking at someone with your eyes—you see their body, but they are more than just their body. This materialist example helps us grasp the concept that our senses only perceive the surface of reality. The true purpose of our life is to see as much as possible of this deeper reality, to understand the world around us more clearly, and to choose light and wisdom over darkness and ignorance. To perceive this deeper reality, we must move closer to our Self (Atman). The Self is eternal, independent of space and time, and capable of seeing the deeper reality.
Here below some practical advice for connecting with the Self
- Meditation and Mindfulness: Regular meditation practice can help quiet the mind and tune into the deeper layers of reality. By focusing inward, we can begin to sense the presence of the Self and its connection to the permanent, unchanging reality.
- Self-Inquiry: Engage in self-inquiry to explore the nature of the Self. Ask questions like, “Who am I?” and “What is the true nature of my existence?” This practice can lead to a deeper understanding of the Self and its role in perceiving reality.
- Living with Awareness: Cultivate a state of constant awareness in your daily life. Be mindful of your thoughts, actions, and emotions, and observe how they align with the deeper truth of the Self. This practice can help you stay connected to the deeper layers of reality even amidst the distractions of the phenomenal world.
- Service and Compassion: Engage in selfless service and acts of compassion. These actions can purify the heart and mind, making it easier to connect with the deeper layers of reality. By serving others, you can transcend the ego and experience the unity of all existence.
AN IMPORTANT ASPECT TO NOTE, NO BOOKS, NO THEORICAL TRAINING CAN HELP YOU TO CONNECT TO YOUR SELF, ONLY, AND ONLY INNER WORK CAN HELP YOU TO PROGRESS ON THIS PATH!
